Roland V-Piano vs Pianoteq+Controller

Roland V-Piano

Well, I don’t have anything to say (yet).
But I can see there will be a lot of talk and discussion on “Pianoteq 3 + Controller” vs “Roland V-Piano“. That is, with the consideration of ‘V-Piano”s US$5995 price tag. Like this discussion, saying/implying V-Piano now virtually killed all the sampled software pianos, while as Pianoteq 3 at most has been sharing the market.

Digital Piano Forum user reported a P-155 aux out recording level abnormal issue.

So I did a test on my own. I didn’t find any abnormal level in my P-155.

I used a “1/4 inch (6.35mm) mono Jack male to RCA female adapter ” to connect P-155 to my JVC mini HiFi for extra bass. I didn’t find that I need to turn up the volume than normal. By the way, the bass of JVC and the speakers of P-155 blend in together beautifully. Now the bass is, I think, 3 times than before when I press the lowest key. And the sound now sounds so controlled, textured and layered.

I used the same adapter for recording the sound to my Sharp MD recorder. This recorder also does 24bit sound recording. I didn’t notice that I need to set the recording level any higher than I normally do.

In short, I didn’t find anything abnormal in terms of level.

Yamaha L-140 Digital Piano Stand for P-155

MDR-CD280

Bavas Music Store, Sydney, today delivered the Yamaha Digital Piano Stand L-140 L140 without extra delivery charge as they promised.

The stand itself is AU$220.

I have set it up in about 30 min for my new Yamaha P155. This stand does what it does pretty well. And the piano now is VERY stable. Much more so than the iron board I have been using before the delivery. I was a bit worried on the fact that the stand is not adjustable in height. But after it is installed. The height is perfect. However, material wise, I believe it is overly priced. The long horizontal bar between the two legs, especially, is made of very cheap material.

I still hightly recommend it to P-155 P155 owners. I read somewhere that you don’t have to bolt the piano onto the stand if you need flexibility of being portable or gigging. Just rest the piano on top of the stand will be fine. As for me, I did. Because I don’t have any plan to move it for a while.

The last image is the headphone I have been using with my P-155. A SONY MDR-CD280.

I might use a “1/4 inch jack (male) to RCA (female) adapter” to

connect my P-155 to my JVC mini Hi-Fi for extra bass. I have a “Panasonic Noise Canceling Headphones RP-HC500“. But it is only suitable for noise, unfortunately. Continue reading

Bavas Music City, NSW, Australia today delivered my Yamaha P155 P-155 digtal piano. These are some Unbox photos.

Aus$1799 for the piano; $85 for the USB Midi interface; $50 for the delivery.

The piano stand for P155 is not in stock (funny, when the stand was in stock, the piano was not). But they said they will deliver that with no extra delivery charge separately later.

(Update: The L-140 stand for P-155 is now delivered.)

So I put the piano on top of the iron board as you can see from the photo. I guess I will set the piano “Post Modern” style in my room for a while.

I have now been able to connect the P155 trough Midi to my Mac where the new Pianoteq 3 is located. I am happy to realize that both the P155 and Pianoteq 3 can make sound at the same time, having the volume properly set on both P155 and my Mac (using a Yamaha TSS-15 as its amp and speakers), it really now seems possible to get the most out of both: the P155’s fantastic “Grand Piano 1” and Pianoteq 3’s “C3 Close Mic” and now “C3ls Close Mic” for its Sympathetic String Resonance and nuances of a real piano … Many people who dislike modeled VST are quite humorous saying Pianoteq like “a robot vomiting…” or “sound more like Caribbean Steel Drum”. To a tiny extend, I concur, especially with the Pianoteq demo number – Chopin Waltz Op 70 No 1, that comes with the software.

Well, was trying to get an Ivory, but now maybe this set up is good enough for now or for me. 🙁

Today, took a few photos of Yamaha p155 while in the CBD, Sydney. (last image is CP300)

Played some preset songs and demos, the key touch seems a lot better than I found last week.

Though I didn’t order it in this CBD store. The best price they can match is still several hundreds more than the other store, check here…

There is a new youtube P155 demo here (in German though)
The last youtube clips is a fabulous P140 demo. The song is a hymn called “As the deer pants for water” or “Come il Cervo”, the demo is a Jazz interpretation of the hymn, which is very well done. The song patch used is P140’s Grand Piano 3 – the soft mellow one. P155 only got Grand Piano 1 and 2. I hope the mellow setting can simulate the Grand Piano 3 of P140… Let’s see.

Yamaha P155

The Yamaha P155 is the updated version of P140 I mentioned earlier. It is not released yet until next month.

For keyboard, I am still using my Evolution MK-361 2 Midi keyboard + Pianoteq 3 virtual physical modelled piano.

If you are in Sydney, Yamaha P155 is on order or pre-order on Allans Music Sydney for $2499 (or $2000 if you bargain) and Wrights Music VIC Australia for $1995. or Bavas Music City (02 98242211) for $1799.

Why the image is so dark? Because it is a background screen image I made for my Mac. Find it here (1920 x 1200)
